About Intel

Intel is a semiconductor company founded in 1968 in Santa Clara, California. For decades it was the dominant maker of processors for personal computers and data center servers. The company operates major fabrication plants in Oregon, Arizona, New Mexico, and internationally. Intel employed roughly 124,800 people at the end of 2023 and about 108,900 at the end of 2024.

More about Intel's layoff history and outlook

Layoff History

Intel has conducted major workforce reductions roughly every four to eight years, often tied to technology transitions or competitive shifts. In 2016, the company cut about 12,000 jobs (11% of its workforce) as PC sales declined. In August 2024, CEO Pat Gelsinger announced 15,000 job cuts, more than 15% of the workforce, as part of a plan to reduce spending by $10 billion in 2025. These cuts hit engineering, corporate, and manufacturing roles across Oregon, Arizona, California, and other sites. In 2025, under new CEO Lip-Bu Tan (who replaced Gelsinger after his December 2024 departure), Intel began another round targeting an additional 15-20% reduction in factory workforce.

How Intel Has Handled Past Disruption

Intel led the PC revolution and dominated the server processor market for over two decades. However, the company was slow to adapt to several major shifts. It missed the mobile processor market almost entirely, ceding smartphones and tablets to ARM-based chip designers. Its attempt to enter the foundry business (manufacturing chips for other companies) has required enormous capital investment and is still unproven. Most significantly, Intel failed to capitalize early on the AI accelerator market, where Nvidia built a commanding lead with GPUs optimized for machine learning.

Current Context

Intel is in the middle of a difficult restructuring. The company is trying to simultaneously compete in AI chips, build a foundry business to rival TSMC, and maintain its core PC and server processor lines. Capital spending is being reduced, and the company has suspended its shareholder dividend. Under new CEO Lip-Bu Tan, Intel has signaled more aggressive cost-cutting and a potential separation of its chip design and manufacturing businesses.
