About Meta

Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook) is a social media and technology company founded by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004. The company operates Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, and is investing heavily in virtual reality through its Reality Labs division. Meta is headquartered in Menlo Park, California, and employs roughly 72,000 people as of late 2024.

More about Meta's layoff history and outlook

Layoff History

Meta had never conducted a large-scale layoff in its first 18 years as a company. That changed in November 2022, when Zuckerberg announced 11,000 job cuts, roughly 13% of the workforce and the first mass layoff in the company's history. He attributed the decision to overhiring during the pandemic e-commerce surge and falling ad revenue. In March 2023, Zuckerberg announced another 10,000 cuts as part of what he called the Year of Efficiency, which also eliminated 5,000 open roles. Smaller cuts continued through 2024 across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Reality Labs teams. In January 2025, Meta announced plans to cut another 5% of workers through performance-based terminations, affecting roughly 3,600 positions.

How Meta Has Handled Past Disruption

Meta's track record with industry shifts is uneven. The company successfully adapted to mobile by redesigning its apps and ad platform between 2012 and 2014, a transition that initially spooked investors but ultimately drove years of revenue growth. Its bet on the metaverse, announced with a corporate name change in October 2021, has been far more costly. Reality Labs lost over $40 billion between 2020 and 2024. Zuckerberg has maintained the investment while simultaneously cutting costs elsewhere in the company.

Current Context

Meta is pivoting from its metaverse focus toward AI. The company released its Llama family of open-source AI models and is building AI features into its social apps. Capital spending is rising sharply, with billions directed at AI data center infrastructure. Zuckerberg has signaled that 2025 will be an intense year, with continued emphasis on efficiency and performance management alongside heavy AI investment.
